Air pollution has been a long standing issue in communities with bigger populations and industry. Staying healthy and keeping our air clean requires active participation by everyone to report visible emissions and smells that are good indicators of our local air quality.
Point sources are generally emissions that are released from a discrete source like a stack or "chimney" of a coke oven battery. They are a high source of particulate and contaminants. They are often evaluated based on their opacity.
The emissions vary where they start and stop compared to a direct point like a stack. They are normally captured by devices called baghouses and caused by leaks. They can contain heavy metals, particulate and greenhouse gases.
Pollution can become worse and be more visible when particulate reacts with other contaminants already present in the air. More particulate can results in greater amounts of precipitation and the formation of more greenhouse gases.
When the weather is not favorable and operations are poor, you will see "bands" and "patches" of pollution that lower air quality. They result from fugitive, point source and secondary formation.
Coke ovens release many harmful contaminants that are carcinogenic such as benzene. Emissions can occur from leaking doors, lids, standpipes and collection main.
Coke Oven Battery (COB) stacks are a common and high source of particulate and contaminants. Generally, darker emissions indicate higher amounts of contaminants.
Charging (filling coke ovens with coal) and pushing (removing coke from the ovens) can results in large visible emissions when there are operational difficulties or deficiencies
The process of making molten iron in a blast furnace can result in a upset where bleeder valves open. When they open, they can release high levels of particulates and gases.
The removal of molten iron (tapping) from a blast furnace can result in the release of high amounts of particulate, often as iron oxides. They are normally captured by a baghouse.
The addition of molten iron and alloys to basic oxygen and ladle metallurgy furnaces to make steel can release numerous contaminants including heavy metals.
Condition 11. The Company shall inform the public by posting on the Company's corporate website all incidences with environmental impacts related to process upsets, failure of any equipment, including failure of any air pollution control equipment, in the Facility within twenty-four (24) hours of occurrence
