Although there are many laws established by our province to protect out health against air pollution, they are often not enforced by the ministry. Fines are commonly issued in the US to cokemakers who violate air emissions like stack opacity violations. Even compared to Hamilton, similar issues from Algoma Steel are not investigated and not prosecuted by our ministry. There are no public records of Algoma Steel facing fines for air emissions despite over 18,000 stack opacity violations, multiple unreported bleeder valve emissions and large emissions event in 2019, as well as hundreds of operational upsets and over 43,000 stack opacity violations since 2017.
A recent prosecution of ArcelorMittal Dofasco in Hamilton for air emissions:
ArcelorMittal Dofasco fined more than $260K for cloud of pollution in 2018

Pollution should not be free in Sault Ste. Marie!
Our health and the environment matters and we need to hold our leadership responsible for ensuring the ministry properly enforces issues in our city.
Our city has not effectively addressed this issue and our Mayor has not played an active role in ensuring our air quality network is adequate to protect our health.
Demand that our city communicates with the Minister of the Environment so we have a right to breathe cleaner air.
