Immediate and serious concerns about pollution to the air, land and water can be addressed by the Spills Action Center. They function to perform a coordinated response with the ministry, emergency services and other government agencies.

Your air and water quality are the responsibility of your local ministry. If you notice any air pollution, noises or smells which concern you, or any contamination in the river you can contact the local ministry who coordinates with SAC to address issues.

Recognizing Our Carbon Footprint
The depletion of our protective ozone layer from greenhouse gases and their impact to environment and our health are becoming increasingly more apparent. In what is being described as a Climate Emergency; we are seeing higher temperatures, more frequent natural disasters, and serious health consequences like skin cancer from UV exposure. In our community we are currently experiencing higher rates of cancer including skin cancer.
Sault Ste. Marie is recognized as a leader for generating green energy from solar and wind farms as well as electricity from hydroelectric dams. However, historically due to our heavy industry like Algoma Steel, we are also a large producer of greenhouse gas emissions:
"Algoma is the second largest GHG emitter in Ontario and the 12th largest emitter of GHG in Canada, with the other integrated producers in the same range."

Until Algoma Steel's commitment to transition to Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF) technology occurs, we can expect to continue to be a large emitter of greenhouse gases. It is a gradual transition that will not produce significant decreases in greenhouse gases for 4-5 years. We must be committed to making meaningful changes and taking corrective actions to reduce our carbon footprint and fight our climate crisis. Future generations are depending on us.
